Quote of the Day: It Takes A Village...

"No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers." ~ Laurie Colwin, American Writer

The Raven's View
The phrase "it takes a village" is actually of African origin and alludes to the belief that raising children successfully requires the combined effort and influence of the entire community in which that particular child grows in. Indeed, no man is an island after all, as the saying goes. In this case, I found this famous phrase as a similarly apt description of how any cook's culinary expertise and knowledge develops. We all owe our cooking insights and inspiration to tips and recipes gleaned from varied sources including perhaps our own mothers or other family members, restaurant menus, cookbooks, blogs, and cooking shows, to name just a few. Thus, as writer Laurie Colwin notes in her quote highlighted above, even when you cook a meal just for yourself sometimes, it is never quite a wholly solitary endeavor since you will most likely be applying those very same insights gained from various sources to your own cooking process. Truly, it similarly takes a village to make a great cook!
