Signature Dish of the Day: Classic Apple Pie Turnovers

Signature Dish of the Day: Happy Friday! Wrapping up our week and the month of November on a very sweet note by showcasing two amazing desserts today! Our first dessert showcase are these delightfully delicious Classic Apple Pie Turnovers I recently made 😋. Dessert is not a huge thing in our household so I don't tend to make a lot of them, but as a firm believer in trying new things and being open to exploration, I have increasingly made efforts to make a foray into the dessert world, one recipe at a time. Apple turnovers are basically mini versions of apple pie that you can hold in your hand, no fork required 😊. For this recipe, I used about 4 crisp gala apples since that is what I had in my fridge and I am so glad they turned out just fine! I first peeled and sliced them into thin strips. I then lightly sautéed them in some unsalted butter, seasoned with about 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and drizzled the juice of 1/2 a lemon to provide some balanced acidity and tangy flavor. I let this cook for about 7 minutes until the sauce around the apples had started to thicken and form a brown paste as depicted on the photo below. I then preheated my oven to 400℉ and started working on the filling. I used simple store-bought puff pastry sheets that were already pre-cut into squares and they made my work so much easier! I simply scooped about 1 tablespoon of the apple filling into each square, folded them as best as I could (trust me, they don't have to be perfect 😄), and crimped the edges to create a beautiful pattern and ensure the contents do not spill over during the baking process. I then baked the turnovers at 400℉ for 25 minutes until the were golden brown. Although this description might sound labor-intensive, this recipe is truly super fun and easy to prepare and these delightful desserts are well worth the effort you put into them. They turned out to be incredibly delicious and I highly recommend them as a dessert, snack, or even breakfast dish. Enjoy and have a great weekend! 😍
